Waiting For My Real Life To Begin: A Personal Reflection In Anticipation Of Year 2009

Written on December 31, 2008 – 11:35 AM | by rjmarmol

There are no words for this post. The song says it all for me. Every line is my life spelled-out.
I thank you for the inspiration while I sit here in anticipation of the year ahead… While I wait eagerly for my real life to begin. If only you can be there with me when it happens…

“Let me throw one more dice.
I know that I can win.
I’m waiting for my real life to begin.”

I have high hopes for 2009.

But if I ever die this year, let this song play endlessly while I’m taken to my resting place, for if my life doesn’t begin here and now, I’m sure there — where I will nourish the grass above me — is where my life begins.

Listen to “Waiting For My Real Life To Begin” (plays in a new window)

Waiting For My Real Life To Begin
Performed by: Colin Hay

Any minute now my ship is coming in
I’ll keep checking the horizon
And I’ll stand on the bow
And feel the waves come crashing
Come crashing down, down, down on me

I’m Amazed: A 2008 Year-End Reflection

Written on December 31, 2008 – 10:00 AM | by rjmarmol

Click here to listen to “I’m Amazed” (plays in a new window).

As the year draws to a close a few hours from now, allow me to reflect on the things that happened in the year that we will leave behind. Never has there been a time more challenging than these times. Never have we been faced by such pressing issues such as war, global warming, oil supply problems, social and political turmoil, incurable diseases, technology dilemmas and moral degradation — all at the same time.
I pray that we don’t lose hope. I pray that despite of all these seemingly insurmountable challenges, we resolve to forge ahead — march with courage — and press on. We survived years of evolution. We’ve been through worse and came out victorious. If we did it then, we can do it again.

Diamond may be the hardest material on earth, but even that shimmering, mighty piece of stone will shy away from the true champion — the toughest of all — the human heart.

In remembering the good and the bad of the year that was, indulge me on this dedication:

I make this post for all those who’ve been victims of injustice, in any form.

I make this post for all the politicians who seek nothing but more power and wealth and forget the higher purpose of their existence.

It Ain’t Over ‘Til It’s Over

Written on December 31, 2008 – 1:23 AM | by rjmarmol

I’ve always liked Lenny Kravitz and most of his songs. But this one is definitely my favorite of his.  Until now, I’m  bowled over each and every time I listen to it. I wonder why. Maybe you know.

This song tells you two things:
1. Never ever give up on love.
2. Always be in love.

So, to you reading this, I say: It ain’t over ’til it’s over!
Click here to listen to this song now!

We are one…

Let Me Tell You A Story (Pass The Hat, Please…)

Written on December 31, 2008 – 12:46 AM | by rjmarmol

Unlike many girls out there, I never really dreamed of becoming a beauty queen or a movie star. Maybe because I hardly had the makings of either or both.

Unlike many kids out there, I never really dreamed of becoming a doctor or a nurse. Maybe because although I find it fascinating, intriguing and challenging, I knew these hands of mine, caring as they are, will never touch someone else’s blood. Not because I dread it, but because fate would have it that way.

I never dreamed of such things. Or maybe that’s because I hardly dreamed.

They say people who don’t dream have unimaginative minds. Others say the absence of dreams is a manifestation of fulfillment in life. While others still, believe that it simply means you don’t have much problems. Whether those are true or not is not for me to say. All I know is that it’s been a while since I last dreamed, and I don’t even remember what that was about.

Back to my story.

“Don’t You Know Me?”: The Question To Fear Or The Question To Loathe?

Written on December 28, 2008 – 12:33 PM | by rjmarmol

As if the CARP issue and the alleged continued corruption are not enough to contend with, DAR is now faced with another issue of headline material — this time, a story that if only for the news sources that covered it and the blogged story of the family member who was there with the victims, you’d seriously think this story is merely lifted from a movie scene or a usual mauling news printed in the inside of tabloids. And although the DAR chief didn’t have direct participation, he stood there watching the events unfold as if a bemused spectator.

Where have these public officials’ brains gone to? On extended Christmas vacation perhaps? What were these officials thinking? Are their mind and reality too twisted to see past their positions? Is that privilege of being a public official supposed to go into their over-sized heads? Must they carry that title with such arrogance and act as if they own the world? On the contrary, these people, being elected or appointed are all salaried employees of the Filipino people — that alone should be enough reason for them to act accordingly if not with utter humility. Sadly, quite the opposite is true in real life. Is there any other statement more arrogant than “Hindi nila kami kilala! Sabihin mo nga sa kanila kung sino ako!” [You probably don't know who we are! Tell them who I am!"] Read the rest of this entry »

The Revolution Within

Written on December 27, 2008 – 5:29 PM | by rjmarmol

This guy Joma just won’t give it a rest. Miles away from where we are, he is still “trying” to cause trouble here. And I say “trying” because from what I know, his “all-talk, no-show” antics have proved detrimental to the once-powerful group he “once” lead. Twenty years in exile and he hasn’t figured out (just yet) what he’s supposed to do for this country if he is indeed hell-bent on achieving that oh-so-big word called “change”.

If you think you have the power to influence, let that power be used to influence people to do good instead of doing harm.

Oceans away from us, he has attempted to stir the already muddled puddle of mud that is the botched BJE-MOA on AD when he released statements all geared towards that poor attempt of his at inciting the MILF to ignore peace talks and let their guns do the talking. Apparently, that didn’t work. Not enough big words I guess, or not enough “passion” that would spark an “OMG!” or “”eureka!”  moment in the ranks of the MILF. And as if that wasn’t enough, he has tried to forge ties with the MILF in an attempt at bring down PGMA’s government, banking on the idea that they both want her out of Malacanang anyway. Fortunately, and expectedly, the MILF declined the offer, saying that they are honoring the peace accord in effect (although fragile) adding that they have different ideologies anyway. Besides, in my opinion, these two groups, high and mighty as they are, I think they wouldn’t want to share the limelight with eachother in an undertaking as large as that (if ever). They know for a fact that doing so would overshadow eachother’s efforts. And I guess both are too proud for that. Having denied that chance, he now turned his attention to his new prospect –his own men and the rest of the fed-up Filipinos. Read the rest of this entry »

The Year That Was: A Look Back at 2008 — The Wonderful, The Woeful and The Wishful ( “A Day In The Life Of RJ” 2008 Year-End Post)

Written on December 23, 2008 – 2:54 PM | by rjmarmol

We’re only a few days away from 2009. As we bid adieu to 2008, let us look back at a few (or at least those I can still remember) of the significant events that changed the course of our future — as a nation, as a race or maybe even as a person.

The Wonderful:

Manny Pacquiao winning over Oscar Dela Hoya. But more than that, it’s Manny Pacquiao’s success in competing with himself — his expectations, his challenges, his goals and his dream. Not many people can do that.

8 Reasons Why Political Rallies Have Become Overrated

Written on December 16, 2008 – 3:14 PM | by rjmarmol

1. Filipinos are hopeless romantics.

Oh, we know this all too well. We are in love with democracy. Nothing wrong with that, really. What’s wrong is when we play the part of the naive girl who gives her all to the man of her dreams who turns out to be nothing more than a professional “playa” who toys with feelings and leaves you for “dead” when he’s got what he wanted. Oh, the tragedy of it. Thing is, in this analogy, I speak of a single victim. But, as it relates to us, there are more or less 90 million victims — now, that’s a lot of “naive girls”. And boy, do the future seem gloomy..
